The Michigan Republican Party has backed legislation that would make medical marijuana a crime.
The state House and Senate approved the bill Thursday, and it is expected to be signed into law by Gov.
The bill was introduced in May and passed both houses of the legislature last year.
“This legislation is an affront to the freedom of speech and the dignity of a man’s body,” said House Speaker Michael Madigan, who said in a statement the measure would make it a crime for anyone in Michigan to possess or use marijuana, even for medical purposes.
Medical marijuana is legal in 19 states and the District of Columbia, but marijuana is still illegal under federal law.
Marijuana remains illegal under the Controlled Substances Act, but states have allowed some use of medical marijuana, such as for people with HIV/AIDS, chronic pain, epilepsy, and Crohn’s disease.
